About Voter Documentary

Voter Documentary (working title) is an independent documentary film about how Americans perceive voting and their role in the electoral process. Our mission is to examine voting at local, state and federal levels, to present an analytical portrait of elections systems, and to encourage greater understanding, discourse and participation.

LaHood Productions has interviewed voters in 22 states regarding their ideas about voting – or not voting – and what voting really means to them as individuals. One of the issues we address in this film is the tension that exists between the “meaning” of a vote and the “value” of a vote. We investigate factors that influence voter turnout and voters’ satisfaction with election outcomes, which we believe has as much to do with an individual’s faith in the system as it does with his or her preferred candidate winning the race.

Although politics are inherently part of elections, we are committed to focusing this film on the system – the nuts and bolts of how we choose our representatives – rather than on parties or personalities. This approach allows us to impartially evaluate proposals for improving elections in the United States, whether through reform, or by maintaining current structures while ensuring more efficient, accurate and consistent implementation.
